Landlines & Watermarks is a season-long programme of events produced by 509 Arts in response to the flooding in Calderdale of recent years. An ambitious creative project with six ‘Water Works’ projects, Calderland - a community opera and The People’s Fair.

‘Water Works’, a series of six original new creative projects commissioned from local artists who are working with hundreds of people from the flood-hit towns of Calderdale in a cultural celebration of their resilience and friendship. From July to September, the six ‘Water Works’ projects feature the stories and creativity of local people from Brighouse, Elland, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden. You will have the opportunity to see each Water Works project at The People’s Fair.

Calderland is a community opera that will take you on a marvellous musical journey through the Calder Valley’s watery past, present and future, presented by local singers and musicians, including children from four primary schools, Old Town, Bradshaw, St Chad’s and All Saints CE.

Calderland is written by Mike Kenny (whose plays are performed all over the world including the Olivier Award-winning The Railway Children) and composed by Richard Taylor (winner of two UK Theatre Awards), Calderland will be a musical odyssey around the valley’s history and its relationship with water. The making of Calderland is being filmed by the BBC for a short documentary as part of their Inside Out series (to be screened early October).

You can book your free Calderland tickets for 29 & 30 September and 1 October at The Piece Hall box office online or by phone (01422 525222). The performance lasts 1.5 hours including a 30 minute interval.

All elements of Landlines & Watermarks come together at The People’s Fair, a combination of festival, marketplace and street party. The People’s Fair will be a family friendly weekend event showcasing Calderdale’s creative and community talent, independent businesses and civic organisations. It will take place in The Piece Hall courtyard on 30 September and 1 October 11am-5pm.

The People’s Fair will include market stalls, local food traders, street performances and parades (by Handmade Parade, Fire & Water, Pif Paf, Plunge Boom and more), exhibitions and showcases plus a presence by some of the valley’s key support services such as Calder Valley Search and Rescue, West Yorkshire Fire Service and Environment Agency.

Landlines & Waterworks is funded by Calderdale Council, The Community Foundation for Calderdale, Arts Council England, Tipping Point and The Big Lottery.
