A few short months ago we were awaiting People Play the launch celebration party to mark the beginning of our sculpture season here at The Piece Hall. People Play is the first outdoor installation by Alice Irwin, who graduated in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in 2018. Using this background, Irwin pushes the boundaries of what traditional print processes can be, expanding into a world of the three dimensional.

Despite the harsh weather conditions the party went ahead and for some time the sun shone and the wind held its breath as children ran and played between the sculptures with faces cast in smiles.

The party’s live entertainment was provided by the stunningly synchronised Drum Machine who put on two energetic shows in both sunshine and rain. The Hebden Bridge based band performed admirably through the adverse weather conditions to a crowd that could not stop dancing!

Our Heritage and Learning team transformed the learning studio into a shadow puppet workshop. Shadow puppets were created using the shapes and symbols that are emblematic of Alice Irwin’s work and were cast onto a gigantic white sheet for everyone in the workshop to see. Thank you to all the little crafters who joined the team.

Alas, the sun did set, the winds picked up and the heavy rain arrived. Despite the setback, the amazing Luminos provided us with a spectacular light show. Projecting from the Collonade level into the courtyard, they bathed the sculptures in atmospheric illuminations.

It seems like a lifetime ago and we saddened deeply that we cannot continue to share People Play with you. We are working on a way of showcasing Alice’s amazing work through the use of video and photography as we feel that the world needs something to smile about right now.

Stay inside and take care. We’ll see you soon.
